I Own A Business – Not A Job!

Everyday I work with people who own businesses. My business day consists primarily of interacting with my various joint venture partners, CEO’s of businesses I own or am involved with, and independent outsourcers.

I started my current company, TriClare Business Holdings, about 12 years ago and I’ve essentially been unemployed ever since!

That’s because I created my company so that I could own a business (actually several), instead of a job.

Let me explain…

Most of the small business gurus out there will counsel and teach would be entrepreneurs to start a business doing something they know how to do, or are good at. So, for some people, that may be a passion they have, or an extension, or off-shoot, of what they were recently employed at.

With this advice, people that worked in an accounting department become independent bookkeepers, pet lovers start a pet sitting service, and cooks in restaurants become restaurant owners.

Each of these people can truthfully say they “own” their own business. But do they own a business or a job?

Here is the litmus test…

Business owners have systems and team members that run the business on a day-to-day basis. Job owners are their own system and the critical component of their team.

Said another way – You know you own a business when you can go away from the business for an indefinite period of time and when you return the business is actually better than when you left!

Job owners can’t do this!

Right now you’re probably thinking that you don’t have the expertise or the funds to build a system or to hire a team.
